Artist’s Statement 

Randy is an Ottawa-based artist. He has been drawing and painting for over 20 years.  He has worked in pencil, coloured pencil, ink, charcoal, conte, watercolour, acrylic, and oil.  Currently he paints predominantly in oils.  He loves their tactile feel, their luscious consistency, their flexibility, and the ability to just push the paint around on the canvas.  He paints a variety of subjects, but lately has been gravitating towards portraits.  His painting style is very realistic, with a great deal of detail.  Although oil is his current focus he also works in other mediums. 

His art education has been self-directed.  He has studied at Algonquin College, the Nepean Visual Arts Centre, and other Continuing Education venues around Ottawa.  He has studied under various local artists in Ottawa including David Jones, and Kerry Stothers. 

Randy is constantly learning.  He does this through attending workshops and courses, reading artist’s books and magazines, visiting galleries and studio tours, and in discussions with other artists.  Workshops and courses provide him with a regular, consistent painting routine, and a setting devoted entirely to the painting process, free of household distractions.  Otherwise it can be hard to devote time at home in his studio.  They also provide the opportunity to continue learning, to refine his skills, and get encouragement and support from other like-minded artists, as he takes risks with new techniques or subjects.   

Randy has exhibited with the Ottawa Art Association, the Nepean Visual Arts Centre, and at a fundraiser for the United Way.  He has exhibited paintings in four group exhibitions in the past couple of years, displaying as many as fifteen paintings in one show.   

Randy is a member of the Ottawa Art Association.  Many of his paintings are in private collections.
