Jay Anderson Bio November 2009 The inspiration for Jay Anderson’s work is derived primarily from the human form and the many ways it can be interpreted. Anderson’s work is predominantly in acrylic and oil, using large and bold brush strokes. Texture and the use of mixed media is now leading Anderson in the direction of painting abstract figures and faces, using shape and value as a vehicle for expression. She has studied at the Ottawa School of Art, St. Lawrence College, Ontario and Springmaid Beach, USA. She has studied under international artists such as Carla O’Connor, Alex Powers and Skip Lawrence. All of these people have inspired and energized her, and helped her grow into the artist you see today. Her most exciting works of faces, are her large portrayals in mono prints and acrylics of her favourite musicians Tom Waits, Billie Holiday and Cassandra Wilson. Anderson is creating loose interpretive works through the use of acrylics and acrylic mono prints. Currently, Anderson is working with 6 other artists on a one year project called ‘7 Artists at Champlain Lookout - Points of View’ soon to be exhibited at the Cube Gallery, Ottawa (see page 3 for works). This project has drawn the artists together by a shared interest in observing how seasonal changes in the landscape affect their artistic view. They all present individual ‘points of view’ shaped by the weather, the black flies, the tourists and the subtle changes from week to week. Jay Anderson is continuing her quest with capturing this well known beauty spot and continues to paint on the Eardley Escarpment right into the winter of 2009/ 2010.See the progress of this group at http://sites.google.com/site/gatineauproject Anderson is an active member of many Ottawa area art associations as well as a member of the Foyer Gallery where she regularly exhibits and on occasion at the Snapdragon Gallery. Her mentoring and teaching skills have now led her into teaching workshops on painting acrylic portraits and mono prints. Some of Anderson’s many accomplishments include: 1st. prize at the Ottawa Art Associations Awards Show (2005) for her work “Coffee at Dunn’s”. Appeared on Rogers TV, showcasing her first solo show at Chez Lucien (2006)You can see more of Jay Anderson’s work at:www.ottawaartassoc.ca/gallery/artists/jay-anderson.htmwww.foyergallery.come-mail address: jayandersonartist@rogers.com
