Since childhood in British Columbia, I was always drawing, especially liking Prisma Colours. I graduated in Fine Arts, English and Education from East Texas State University and then moved to Ottawa. After a long career in Graphic and Exhibit Design with Parks Canada and the Canada Museum of Science and Technology (as Chief Designer), I took up art full time, studying in Pastels at the Ottawa School of Art, and especially gained insight into this mysterious medium from Albert Handell, American Master Pastelist residing in Santa Fe, N.M. In November, 2006 I received first prize for the Pastel category at the Ottawa Art Association's member-juried show as well as an honourable mention at the 15th Annual Open Juried Exhibition at the Art Gallery of Hamilton sponsored by the society of Pastel Artists Canada. More recently I have been studying Acrylic painting learning new techniques at workshops and exploring a more painterly approach to my imagery. Last year I entered the Acrylic category and received first prize at the OAA juried show. On April 22, 2009 I received another first for mixed media. I have had a number of solo shows including the Cumberland Gallery, part of the city of Ottawa's Community Galleries. I continue to pursue a full-time career in Art and wish to have many more opportunities to exhibit my work signed "Yates", my maiden name.
